Golf lovers in Sweden saw three of their major stars make a impressively solid start to the Players Championship tournament on the PGA Tour at Sawgrass.
Robert Karlsson leads the way for the group of four Swedes, on two under par after the first round in Florida, ranking him T28 overall.
Carl Pettersson and Henrik Stenson are one shot further back on one under, at T38 after the first round.
Fellow Swede Peter Hanson was the only one of the quartet to not break par, finishing on one over after his first round, at position T78.
Karlsson dropped a shot on the 5th hole but fought back well to claim three birdies between the 9th and 13th. Another bogey one hole later was soon cancelled out by Robert’s fourth birdie of the day at the 16th hole. He tees off on day two at 9:00am (local time).
Carl Pettersson had a mixed front nine as he dropped shots at the 3rd, 5th and 6th as well as picking up birdies at the 2nd and 7th. An improved showing on the back nine helped him claw back from one over to one under, with birdies on both of the par fives.
For local boy Henrik Stenson—a resident of Orland, Fla.—it was a day of streaks, as he saw an early birdie on the 2nd hole cancelled out with a bogey on the 3rd, before birdies at the 8th, 10th, 11th and 12th had him at three under. However he couldn’t maintain his progress and bogeyed three times in the last six holes to finish the day level with his countryman Pettersson.
Pettersson will tee off day two at 1:49pm, with Stenson on 11 minutes later.
For Peter Hanson, he will be disappointed to have finished one over par—level with the likes of Peter Kaymer and Sergio Garcia, and one shot ahead of Tiger Woods—after a good start saw him two under at the turn. Another birdie at the 3rd (he played the back nine first) left him at three under with six holes to play, before a shocking collapse saw him finish bogey, par, bogey, par and finally a double bogey 7 on the par 5 9th.
Hanson tees off at 9:00am like Karlsson and will be hoping to recover his form from earlier in the day on Thursday.
