Sweden Golf: Karlsson, Pettersson and Stenson Make Solid Start at Players Championship

Golf lovers in Sweden saw three of their major stars make a impressively solid start to the Players Championship tournament on the PGA Tour at Sawgrass.

Robert Karlsson leads the way for the group of four Swedes, on two under par after the first round in Florida, ranking him T28 overall.

Carl Pettersson and Henrik Stenson are one shot further back on one under, at T38 after the first round.

Fellow Swede Peter Hanson was the only one of the quartet to not break par, finishing on one over after his first round, at position T78.

Karlsson dropped a shot on the 5th hole but fought back well to claim three birdies between the 9th and 13th. Another bogey one hole later was soon cancelled out by Robert’s fourth birdie of the day at the 16th hole. He tees off on day two at 9:00am (local time).

Carl Pettersson had a mixed front nine as he dropped shots at the 3rd, 5th and 6th as well as picking up birdies at the 2nd and 7th. An improved showing on the back nine helped him claw back from one over to one under, with birdies on both of the par fives.

For local boy Henrik Stenson—a resident of Orland, Fla.—it was a day of streaks, as he saw an early birdie on the 2nd hole cancelled out with a bogey on the 3rd, before birdies at the 8th, 10th, 11th and 12th had him at three under. However he couldn’t maintain his progress and bogeyed three times in the last six holes to finish the day level with his countryman Pettersson.

Pettersson will tee off day two at 1:49pm, with Stenson on 11 minutes later.

For Peter Hanson, he will be disappointed to have finished one over par—level with the likes of Peter Kaymer and Sergio Garcia, and one shot ahead of Tiger Woods—after a good start saw him two under at the turn. Another birdie at the 3rd (he played the back nine first) left him at three under with six holes to play, before a shocking collapse saw him finish bogey, par, bogey, par and finally a double bogey 7 on the par 5 9th.

Hanson tees off at 9:00am like Karlsson and will be hoping to recover his form from earlier in the day on Thursday.

Golf News: Three Current Majors Champions Confirmed for Irish Open at Royal Portrush

The Irish Open will see a strong field this year after Keegan Bradley became the latest big name to confirm that he will be participating at Royal Portrush, which takes place from June 28th to July 1st.

Bradley is the reigning US PGA champion, while the US Open champion Rory McIlroy and current Open champion Darren Clarke will also be taking part.

Former majors champions Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell are also confirmed to be appearing.

The field will be competing for the €2 million prize fund, which is an increase on last year’s €1.5 million. 2011′s winner, Simon Dyson, collected €250,000 after posting a total of 269 (-15) for a one-stroke victory.

Bradley, meanwhile, will be competing in Europe for the first time and has spoken about his pride and excitement in visiting Ireland, being of Irish heritage himself.

Dyson will be aiming to become the first person since Colin Montgomerie to successfully defend the Irish Open title, which he achieved in 1996 and ’97.

Previous winners of the Irish Open include the aforementioned Irishman Harrington, as well as Søren Hansen, Sergio Garcia, Ian Woosnam, Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros.

Golf News: Luke Donald Regains World Number 1 Spot from Rory McIlroy

English golfer Luke Donald has regained top spot in the latest World Golf Rankings after finishing third in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, deposing Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy who led for just two weeks.

Having risen back to the top of the rankings earlier in April without having played a round of golf, McIlroy was the world number one for the second time in his career.

Donald, however, needed just a top seven finish in New Orleans to recapture top spot and he duly achieved that with a final round of 67, having earlier carded 73, 65 and 66.

A total score of 17 under par was enough for a third place finish, behind Jason Dufner and Ernie Els, both of whom finished on 19 under.

Dufner ran out the winner after a playoff.

World number four and 2012 Masters winner Bubba Watson was also in action, finishing 11 under for 18th place after only just making the cut after round two, in what was his first tournament since the playoff victory at Augusta.

Despite Luke Donald returning to the top of the rankings, however, his stay there may be a short one as Rory McIlroy returns to action in the Wells Fargo Championships, while Donald has a week off.

Graeme McDowell has had to pull out of competing in the same event after falling ill, but Ricky Fowler, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are all set to compete.

Since Woods was knocked off the throne 18 months ago there have been nine changes in the rankings leader, with Martin Kaymer also leading as well as Donald and McIlroy.

The Great Golf Company and Cleveland Golf Enjoy Great Success on Demo Day at Roda Golf Resort

The Great Golf Company hosted an open demonstration day at Roda Golf & Beach Resort yesterday (18th April) along with Cleveland Golf and everybody involved agreed it was a great success.

Despite a few minor setbacks involving vehicle mechanics, the show got on the road nice and early and golf players teeing off around 10:30am were treated to the first views in Spain of the new Cleveland Classic driver, amongst other things.

Two representatives from Cleveland—Tito and Javier—were present to offer top class support and advice to anybody wishing to try out a new set of irons, the Mashie hybrid or any number of drivers, along with their video launch monitor to show visitors just how their shots were being affected by changing club.

In addition there seemed to be an endless supply of range balls to use!

The Cleveland CG Black irons proved hugely popular with both Spanish and foreign clients, as did the driver of the same range, though of course the new Classic was a big favourite too.

We mustn’t forget to mention the Cleveland XX10 range which was available to use—though priced at a whopping 1.100 € for the driver alone, perhaps it is no surprise that only Robbie from Great Golf’s Campoamor shop was brave enough to “test drive” it!

The Great Golf Company would like to thank Roda Golf Resort, Cleveland/Srixon and all the people who came down to try out clubs and purchase them on the day with fantastic 20% discounts, all of whom helped make the day a real success.

Keep tuned to the Great Golf Company blog for details of future open days when you too can get the benefit of seeing the newest products, receiving the best advice and just as importantly getting big discounts!

You can also follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Pinterest where all of our products, offers and demo days are always posted.
